Last day and heading back to Finland

Last day Monday: Today is my last day in England. On my last day I bought more souvenirs and packed all my bags, checked my documents and everything else.  After I did that I clear my part in fridge and my room. I reserved time from Uber to pick me up in the morning to the train station. That is mostly the whole day. Finland Back to Finland: My journey back to Finland started at 05:05 a.m. in the morning when Uber picked me up. I got with Uber to the railway station, where I got train to the Manchester airport. In the airport my plane took off 09:45 a.m. to Stockholm. From Stockholm my journey continued to Helsinki on another plane. I arrived to Finland around a four o'clock. In Finland my mother picked me up and we went to my cousin's house in Espoo and we spent a few hours there. We arrived home in Kouvola around nine o'clock. I will write a summary about my time in Engalnd in another blog post in few days.

Day 22 Last things to do: Today started my last weekend in Leeds. I woke up around 12.00 p.m. and after breakfast I went to the city to walk around. I boight gifts for people close to me, and of course for myself. Later that day I went for a run and made meal for myself and in the evening I walked around Headingley to see how it differs from Finnish night life. Students are having fun and almost everyone wears something different outfits. For example I saw Ninja Turtles, elfs, stormtroopers from Star Wars and The Simpsons characters. Night life out here is different than in Finland, that's sure. Day 23 Last things to do: Sunday I didn't do anything interesting. I slept well, ate good meals and started to packing my bag. I started packing my bags because I got few more ideas what i should get home from here. Also my flight leaves at 09:45 a.m. and that means that I need to wake up around 04:30 a.m. I'm planning to post a blog where I will list my favourite t

Railway museum and three normal workdays

Kuva
Day 19  Wednesday: After work I walked home and didn't do anything interesting that day so it was an uneventful day altogether. Railway museum: In York I visited the railway museum, even though I'm not so interested in trains. Railway museum was founded in 1975 and the museum won the European Museum of the Year prize in 2001. It was great to see how trains have changed along the years. There are over hundred of trains and about two-hundred other railway vehicles. My favorite trains were the old ones, I didn't care so much about the new trains. Entry to the museum is free but donations are welcome. In addition to trains there are more to see, for example train engines and paintings. Railway museum is close to the train station and I highly recommend to visit it even if you don't like or care about trains. Afrer railway museum I walked around the city and saw the minster again at night. I also bought few souveniers and something to myself. After walking it wa

Day 18 Last day in Technology campus: Today was my last day in Technology campus, because Graham is taking three days off. For the next three days I will be with the estates in Park Lane campus. Today we went with the estates to landfill to drop a full van of garbage. It was my first time in the car that was driving on the left side of the road. It was a bit scary, but I trusted Phill who drove the car. Food in York:   After I visited the York minster I walked a bit around the city. I walked for about an hour and saw a crepe stand. I bought a crepe with nutella inside which you can see in the photo. I'm a chocolate lover so it was delicious. After the crepe I walked around the city visiting some shops and boutiques including a very narrow street with different Harry Potter shops. There was like ten different Harry Potter shops, for example shop with wands, shop with brooms and many others. After the "Harry Potter street" I went to the pub to get something to

Normal day and York Minster

Day 17 Monday: Students don't have school this week because of holidays, so it was a boring day. That's why me and Graham just talked for a few hours. After work, I walked home even though it was raining. It wasn't heavy rain though and despite the rain, the sun was shining. In the evening, I went for a run and cooked food for myself. York Minster: York Minster is the most famous attraction in York. Minster is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter which was fully finished in 1472 but the stone structure was completed in 637. Minster is beautiful and I really wanted to see it inside, but i don't know why but it was closed, or I just didn't understand something, I didn't see an entrance or open doors. At least I saw it from outside and it really was gorgeous. I also climbed on the city walls to see it. The city was very beautiful and I liked it very much. I would like to visit York again but with someone. It's not the same to walk

York Part one, Yorkshire Museum: I decided to write this journey to York in few blogs, so I can tell in every blog something interesting. This time I will tell about Yorkshire Museum which was the first place I visited in York. Yorkshire Museum tells about Yorks history, people of the empire, and Yorks jurassic world which told about fossils of dinosaurs that were found in the area of York, mostly about ammonites and other creatures that lived in the water. My favourite part were large hoard of 1858 Roman coins. It was found at the Wold Newton in Yorkshire by David Blakey in 2014. I don't know why it was my favourite part, but it looked nice. Also I liked a mosaic just because you could walk on it. Other interesting parts were for example skulls and skeletons of the people of the empire. I wanted to see the gardens outside near the museum but it was under construction, I still saw an old wall next to the museum. Tomorrow I will tell you about the old York Minster w

Two days before york

Day 14 Nothing new: I was working normaly from 8:30 till 15:30 and I don't know why, but I got very tired. After work I walked home and just laid on my bed and didn't do anything. I didn't do anything else that day. Day 15 Saturday:  Today I woke up around 13:00. I think that I didn't get enough sleep this week. After I woke up and ate I decided to clean my room and do laundry. When I finished everything it was around three o'clock. It was a nice weather so I decided to walk around Headingley, I walked for about an hour and a half. While walking, I wanted to get something sweet for the evening so I went to the grocery store. I bought juices, crisps and candies which I haven't seen in Finland. In the evening I was looking on the internet about museums and places that I could visit in York, and marked them in the app called Maps.Me. The app works without internet, but you need to download city map on your phone. When you have downloaded the map you

New friends and ping pong

Day 12 Firs work experience in pl campus: Today I was with Graham from 08:30 till 12:30. After lunch which was 12:30 - 13:30 I went to the pl campus and worked with estates. After work I went to the school gym to do workout, there were two school trainers who can help you with your workout. The gym and trainers are free for the school's students and staff. Ben was one of the trainers who showed me everything and told when I can use the gym and where I need to sign in everytime I use it, Ben also offered to coach me but I had a program so I politely declined. After workout I went to the grocery store to get Food for next week. In the grocery stores there are many offers like buy two of the same product and get it two quids cheaper. Day 13 Ping Pong: Today I was with Graham because he asked Paul if I could stay the whole day with him. In the technology campus was some kind of "game day". In the canteen was table tennis, playstation, board games and more. S

Three normal days

Day 9 Sick: I woke up in the morning and felt sick so I didn't do anything, I just slept and drank tea. Can't write anything from that Sunday. Day 10 Normal day: After work I walked home to eat something little, and after that I ran as a workout. I was tired after running so I didn't do much. During the run I saw few beautiful churches and a big park called Burley park. Also I noticed that many people give space so I can run past them. That's very kind in my opinion and I haven't seen that in Finland. When I got home I was tired and just took a shower, ate and went to bed. Day 11 Good news: Today I was with Graham in technology campus from 08:30 till 12:30 and after that for the first time I started working in park lane campus with estates. Estate with whom I was with was called Jim and he showed me around the campus. While walking in the building I saw a school gym, I asked Jim to show me the gym a bit closer and it was just what I needed.

Shopping

Day 8 I woke up at 08.00 a.m. and was planning to go to the York. Unfortunately it was raining and windy outside so I decided to visit York next weekend. I read more about York and the rain didn't stop. The rain stopped about at 12.30. p.m. so I went to Leeds with few other students from Finland. We visited a few malls and shops that you can't find in Kouvola. Other students bought clothes, but I didn't buy anything. I was searching something to bring to Finland as a souvenir. I actually found some souvenirs but was scared to buy anything. I have two and a half weeks left so I decided to not hurry. At least I have a few ideas in my mind. In the middle of shopping we ate fish&chips. They were good but not as good as in the other place that was located next to my job. After lunch we walked around Leeds and saw for example the town hall from up close. Other students wanted to visit more shops, but i went home, but I went home. It wasn't that dark yet so I w

Day 6 and 7

Kuva
Day 6 I started working at 8:30 at the technology campus. The day was boring except in the afternoon when a group of student played truth or dare and one of the girls kicked a boy in the groin. Of course it hurts but he laughed, it was pretty funny situation. The kick was aimed in the stomach and wasn't hard. After the work I went to the market to buy food. I decided to be cheap and not buy a plastic bag and just ended up putting everything in my backpack. Everything didn't fit and i was too proud to return and get a plastic bag. So I went to the bus stop with backpack full of food, while carrying juice and two packs of macaroni in my hands. I got back to the house without any problem except getting a few looks my way. Rest of the day I was chatting with Joan and Tim and went for a little walk around Headingley. Also I read about York and i'm planning on visiting the city on Saturday or next weekend. Graham said that on Saturday there might be a strong wind so I wi

Problems with finding a gym.

Day 5 Gym problems: Today after working I didn't walk home because I needed to find a good gym. I looked up few gyms close to my work place or home with Graham. We found two gyms and I wanted to check them out for myself so I went there after work. First gym was good and cheap but it had one problem, I didn't have the gym card. I could order one but the gym worker said that it could even take two weeks for it to come. The second gym was even farther away and in different direction, also for one month, it cost £43, which is about 50€. I contacted my teacher who is helping me to prepare myself to the combat divers and he also helps planning my exercises. Now I'm waiting him to answer and telling his opinion.   After I came home I went for a run and ran about 10 km at the local park. For the rest of the day, I was sitting around in my room and trying to find another gym that I could actually go to. (Graveyard on the way home)

First day of work

Day 4 Work: My work started at 08:30 a.m. and of course I was almost late on my first day. I had decided that I would walk to work but half way there I noticed that I have only 10 minutes left, so I had only one option, run. At 08:29 I arrived to the Technology campus where I work in, so not even close. At work, they showed me what to do, where and how the day will go on.  Till 10:30 I was with Graham and Richard checking that people have passes to enter the college. From 10:30 to 12:30 I was with Sam and her team as an estates. After that I had lunch from 12:30 to 13:30 and for the rest of the day, I was with Graham and Richard again. Before my lunch, Richard recommended takeaway restaurant with fish&chips. I ate there and it was delicious! I am sure that it's not my last time eating there. For the rest of the day, I was home drinking tea and chatting with Joan and Tim because of the rain. It's not all bad though, I had fun chatting with them. Tomorrow I&#

First touch with Leeds

Kuva
Day 3 Leeds: Today I went to the Park Lane Campus where we did welcome with Paul who is International Project Officer and four more students from Kotka. After the welcome we went to find a place to eat. Three students ordered tacos while me and another student ordered Vietnamese food. I ate soup with mushrooms, meat and some vegetables. After we ate we headed to the mall where we did some shopping and got tasty ice-teas. The ice-tea was with some bubbles which you could suck through a straw, pop it in your mouth and you could taste the liquid inside of it, which was sweet. I also saw a man raging in an apple store, throwing phones, laptops and watches off the table. Security got him and after a few minutes, the police came. Police took few photos of the scene and filed a police report. I thought to myself that it's gonna be a big bill that he's going to pay for. After shopping we just walked around the Leeds and got food for home. In the store I noticed that the tea

Headingley

Day 2 Headingley: My day started at 12.00 pm. when I woke up. I started my day with breakfast. I ate Joan's bread with marmalade and of course, with tea. After I ate, I went to my room to read about Leeds in internet and from the travel brochure which Joan's husband Tim gave to me. Around 16.00.pm. I went outside for a walk. I walked for about an hour and a half and saw the main street of Headingley. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures for the blog. Anyway, there were shops, pubs, restaurants and lots of takeaway ca fes. It was a bit boring day but tomorrow is my first day of work and it's in the middle of Leeds. In the evening I played with Joan's cat called Missy. She is very playful even though she is 8 years old and she purrs a lot. Tim said that the cat likes me. Regarding my feelings on the second day, I'm getting more and more used to this place, which in term makes me feel more confident being here.

First Day!

Day 1 From Finland to Leeds, England: I woke up 03.15 a.m. and we drove with my mother to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. From Helsinki I flew to the Manchester airport. From Manchester I took the train to Leeds. In Leeds i had a little problem finding the way to Joan's house. After one hour i finally found the easiest way to get there. I took the train and walked about five hundred meters. Finally I found Joan's house! She gave me a warm welcome and a tour of her house. She also told me about local shops, restaurants and pubs. I also asked about public transport and she told me what she knew. She offered me tea and bread with marmalade. We drank tea and I went outside for a walk. During the walk I went grocery shopping. When I got back, I spent the rest of my day at the house and talked with Joan and her husband Tim.
